Should my girlfriend take herpes medicine?

My girlfriend just found out she has herpes. I'm going to get tested too. They say the first outbreak is the worst, but she didn't even have a bad outbreak, or barely an outbreak at all. She was a little sore down there and her doctor checked it out and it turned out to be herpes. No major problems since then. Should she be on some daily herpes medicine or something? I'm asking for over the counter drug recommendations. I figured her doctor at Planned Parenthood would have prescribed her something, but the only pills that she's taking are birth control. I'd like to know what to suggest her. And maybe even for myself in case I have it now too.
