Story writing help, trying to put myself in the character's shoes, I need help?

The main character is an 11 year old girl named Robin and her father abuses her and her mother. One night, he commits suicide (logical explanation!) I'm not sure how to make them react! Her mother never really did love him, so I think it'd be kind of unrealistic of her to be relieved. As for Robin, I mean your father died, most people would be crying their eyes out. But he abused her physically and verbally and beat her! Same for her mother, how should I make them react? And after a while the mother moves them to Pennsylvania, where she grew up.
